Plantation Course

A well-loved course, re-invented.

A vision. A labor of love. An on-going conversation between brothers about the course they grew up playing more times than they can count. Inspired by the traditional profile of Walter Travis’ 1928 original nine-hole course, our beloved Plantation Course was completely redesigned by Davis and Mark Love of Love Golf Design in 2019. The result? A course you’ll want to play again and again.

A historic course for a historic resort, Plantation is a classic design that brings back some traditional features and character: bulkheads, railroad ties, the Principal’s Nose on #10 green, a punch bowl green on #13. And a few of Travis’ chocolate drops here and there. Fewer bunkers, a more open feel. Strategically interesting, with a challenging finishing hole. But since this is a course that keeps playability top of mind for all levels, there’s always a way. Along with the neighboring Seaside Course, it is the home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic, a FedEx cup event hosted by Love.

At this generous opening hole, a drive down the left side of the fairway will open up the green for the approach. The two-tiered green with swale through the middle will call for an accurate approach.

One of the shorter par fours on the course, the drive here must challenge the bunkers on the right side of the fairway or the player will face tree trouble on the approach. A lofted second shot is needed to carry the front bunker at this elevated green.

This long par three has a strong “false front” and is protected by bunkers on the left. The large green provides multiple hole locations and the open front allows for run-up approaches. Par is a good score here.

This long par five won’t be reached by many players in two shots. Generous width off the tee leads to a more difficult lay-up as players must negotiate a lake down the left and central bunkers in the fairway. The green is well protected with bunkers, making a birdie on this hole a true accomplishment.

A long par four, this hole demands an accurate tee shot. Once in the fairway, the player is faced with a wide but shallow green. Missed shots right of the green will find a large bail out area providing an opportunity for recovery.

This medium-length par four has no fairway bunkers but accuracy is still a premium. Players must be on the correct side of the fairway to get an open look into one of the course’s smallest greens.

This island par three green, the largest green on the course, makes an inviting target. Hole locations on the large undulating green can make hitting the green only the first test to overcome for par.

This par five will be reachable depending on the wind. With bunkers on both sides of the fairway, players hitting good drives have the opportunity to reach the green, but must negotiate a lake running the right side of the fairway. A back right hole location provides a tough shot even with a short iron.

A long par four, this hole is tree lined and features a large ridge protecting the left side of the fairway. Players hitting the fairway will be faced with a long second, but the open entry to the green and large chipping swale will allow for run-up shots and recovery opportunities.

This short, drive-able par four provides the golfer with numerous options. The boldest player may try to go for the green, but the danger lurks with the left edge of the green guarded by the water. More conservative players face a lay-up decision to avoid the “principal’s nose” bunkers. Once negotiated, the players will find a small, gently undulating green surface.

This par four calls for a driver for some off the tee, while others may hit a fairway wood to avoid trouble. A second shot to this green provides challenge with cross bunkers, with care needed to avoid going over the green into the lake.

With a lake on the left and out of bounds on the right, this may be the most difficult driving hole on the course. Once finding the fairway, the player will need to negotiate the large bunker guarding the right two thirds of the green protecting this “bowl” green.

The split fairway on this medium length par five requires decision making off the tee, but can be reachable with a good drive. The large, slightly undulating green is receptive to both long and short approaches while subtle green contours separate the green into multiple hole locations.

This short par four will require a lay-up off the tee for most players. Native areas protect the left side of the fairway but a well-placed tee shot will give the player a good view of the smallest green on the course. Two accurate shots will be required to hit this green in regulation.

The shortest par three on the course doesn’t necessarily make it the easiest. With a deep pot bunker front left of the two-tiered green, an approach to the center and two putts will make for a good par.

A well-placed tee shot is critical at this lay-up hole. Bail out right and the view of the green will likely be blocked by the ridge. Take on the lake left of the fairway to get a good look at the green. A short second will follow a good drive, but this large undulating green will make finding a short birdie putt difficult.

This reachable par five finishing hole can provide a great finish end to the round. The water off the tee will only affect the longest hitters, but all players will have to deal with the water eventually. Players hitting to this green with second or third shots will face water lining the left side and bunkers protecting the right side. This birdie hole can give some chances at eagles.

Golf History

Golf has been an important part of the Sea Island experience from the beginning.

Plantation opened as a nine-hole course in 1928, in the days when resort guests were accommodated on a nearby floating hotel, the Amphitrite, because The Cloister did not open until October of that year.

Since then, records have been set, championships have been hosted, and top touring professionals have been lured to Sea Island’s glorious setting.

But it’s the community atmosphere and the fun had out on our courses that we’re most proud of.
