    Our Company Commitment

Since arriving on the Georgia coast in the 1920s, Sea Island and its founders have maintained a long-standing commitment to the area. An early demonstration of this commitment was in 1928 when Sea Island founder Howard Coffin paid for a county-wide survey to serve as a base for zoning – with Glynn County becoming only the second county in the United States to have these types of guidelines. Over the years, Sea Island has donated land for most of the churches on St. Simons Island and parcels of land and monetary amounts have been given to ensure the preservation of historical sites throughout the Golden Isles. Sea Island was a founding partner of the St. Simons Land Trust and continues to make charitable contributions that weave into all aspects of life in our area. Sea Island also created the Sea Island Foundation which provides support to numerous non-profit entities in our community. We have been here for almost a century and are committed to the next century and beyond.

Recent Initiatives

In-Kind Donations and Charitable Contributions

In addition to the many gifts of land for island churches, parks, roads, and schools, the Company continues to assist all manners of charitable organizations. Since 2020, more than a million dollars in donations has been awarded locally and nationally. Gifts may be as simple as a cash donation to a round of golf or to stays in one of our three hotels. In between are thousands of dollars of complimentary food and sponsorships for multiple community events and fundraisers ranging from schools and universities across the nation to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the LPGA Foundation, American Cancer Society, and Georgia Natural Resources Foundation.

Under One Roof

Under One Roof, a fund of the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation (CCGF), helps those in Glynn County who have lost their homes due to unexpected life changes or catastrophic events. Sea Island has been a driving force in the creation of this fund, with The Anschutz Foundation pledging to match up to $5 million raised, amplifying the impact of every contribution.

America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia

In 2021, Sea Island partnered with America’s Second Harvest and presented a community challenge where Sea Island would match any funds raised, which resulted in a $500,000 grant from the company. With these funds, ASH was able to break ground on a new 50,000 square foot facility, offering the ability to house a larger community center and expand the programming it can offer, including the distribution of hot meals. This branch alone serves six counties and partners with seventy-eight different agencies to collect and distribute more than 2.2 million pounds of food, per year.

Glynn County Pantry Program

As part of our partnership with America’s Second Harvest, Sea Island is a sponsor of the Glynn County School Pantry Program which provides take-home meals for all public elementary, middle, high, and specialty schools in the county. The program offers an estimated 8,000 meals to those experiencing food insecurity within Glynn County. To benefit this program and the Kids Café, Sea Island hosts the annual ‘Chef’s Classic.’

Saved by Grace

Sea Island has nurtured a close relationship with Saved By Grace, a local non-profit that provides basic necessities for the unsheltered in the community. David Cutia, Facilities Manager at Sea Island, meets periodically with Saved by Grace residents and has hired several to work on his team. Sea Island also provides transportation for these men, to and from work, which has been instrumental for their success.

St. Simons Land Trust

In 2001, Sea Island established a giving program that eventually evolved into the St. Simons Land Trust’s ‘Pennies for Preservation’ – a voluntary giving program that was officially launched in 2017. For more than twenty years, Sea Island has instituted a voluntary $2/night donation that guests may opt in to during a stay at The Cloister or The Lodge. These dollars go directly to the St. Simons Land Trust and assists in efforts to protect and preserve the island. To date, Pennies for Preservation has raised more than $1,000,000, with Sea Island Company contributing nearly 50% of that total.

Dreamers Success Event

Partnering with Communities in Schools and Roberts Civil Engineering, Sea Island invited 130 high school students from Brunswick High, Glynn Academy, and McIntosh County Academy to the resort for a day of fun, empowerment, and inspiration. Throughout the event, students competed in team building challenges, listened to energizing motivational speakers, and participated in an immersive introduction to the variety of job opportunities offered at Sea Island.

Glynn County Athletics

Featuring 168 teams and over 2,500 participants, student athletes in the Glynn County Athletics program may participate with no out-of-pocket expenses due to sponsorships like ours.

Coastal Outreach Soccer

Named for Sea Island founder Howard Coffin, the Coffin Park field was originally completed in 2013 to provide local youth and Coastal Outreach Soccer a home field. During this build, members of the Sea Island Golf Club agronomy team assisted student athletes with the installation of an irrigation system. In 2018, Sea Island Company partnered with Coastal Outreach Soccer, Honeywell, and Glynn County Board of Commission to redevelop Paulk Park field. The agronomy team was involved once again to ensure the turf was properly planted and maintained. The leaders of Coastal Outreach Soccer, along with its student athletes, were also invited to the Sea Island Golf Club to see best practices of field maintenance in action first hand.

Glynn Haven Park

In 2021, Sea Island was approached regarding a proposal for acquiring and converting land in the Glynn Haven neighborhood on St. Simons Island to a county park and green space. This neighborhood, which has the highest density of homes with children attending local schools, made for a great choice to add a new mid-island park. With a team of over 30 team members – ranging from managers and designers to contractors and production staff – Sea Island provided nearly 1,200 hours of labor and expertise to develop and landscape this park.

Pirates of the Spanish Main

In 1931, Sea Island founder Howard Coffin formed a social club for high school girls called Pirates of the Spanish Main. Early on, their duties consisted of greeting dignitaries visiting Sea Island and the local area, but quickly evolved to focus on community service throughout the community. This group is made up of sixty members from Glynn Academy, Brunswick High School and Frederica Academy. The Company continues to support this group with sponsorships and donations.

Sea Island Legacy Fund

To help provide for our Sea Island family in a time of need, The Sea Island Legacy Fund was created in conjunction with Sea Island Club members to assist team members who may be experiencing a unique, severe, economic hardship. Since its creation, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been distributed to team members, with donations to the Fund continuing to be provided by Sea Island, its members, and its guests.

  • A Respect for the Past

From its earliest days, decisions made by the company have been strongly influenced by a keen sense of history and a desire to preserve significant remains of earlier days of coastal Georgia. The following examples illustrate how historic preservation has been part of Sea Island Company development for years.

  • Development Vision

Howard Coffin understood that good zoning was key to properly planned development. In 1928, after he paid for a county-wide survey to serve as a base for zoning, Glynn County became the second in the nation to have this type of planning vision. Once guidelines were in place and as the years went by, the company demonstrated its firm belief that in the long run what was good for Glynn County would also be good for Sea Island Company and its team members.

  • Donated Land

Below is a partial listing of land Sea Island has provided for public use, either through land exchange or through partial or outright donation. These contributions amount to hundreds of acres provided by the company for the benefit of thousands of people.

    • Epworth-by-the-Sea Methodist Conference Center
    • Massengale Park and Gascoigne Park
    • Kings Way from Frederica River Bridge to the Village
    • Frederica Academy
    • St. Simons Presbyterian Church
    • Wesley Church at Frederica and Wesley Memorial Gardens
    • Christian Renewal Church
    • Fort Frederica Presbyterian Church
    • Frederica Baptist Church
    • Expansion of Christ Church, Frederica
    • Expansion of First African Baptist Church
    • Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity
    • Oglethorpe Point Elementary School
    • The county fire station on Lawrence Road
  • Fort Frederica and Fort King George

As with other important local issues, company founder Howard Coffin and A. W. Jones, Sr., took the lead in having Fort Frederica declared a national shrine. In 1936 they urged the Georgia Congressional delegation to pass legislation specifying about eighty acres of the townsite as necessary for the establishment of the national monument. The Fort Frederica Association, formed in 1940 to find funds to acquire and develop the site, has since benefited from unflagging support from Sea Island Company.

Fort King George in McIntosh County was essentially given by the company to the State of Georgia in 1940, “for the purpose of securing a State Park and to improve the same as a State Park and as the site of Old Fort King George.” In 2002 the company helped fund the purchase of additional adjacent land to protect and expand the Fort.

  • Sapelo, Jekyll, and Cumberland Islands

Through the sale of Sapelo’s south end to the state of Georgia, the “Big House” was preserved, and the island was designated as a site for significant marine research. When the once-famous Jekyll Island Club closed, the state acquired the island, thanks largely to A.W. Jones, Sr. Long-time Sea Island Company president Jim Compton is credited with developing the master land use plan for Jekyll. When Cumberland Island was on the verge of being developed along the lines of Hilton Head, with high density condominiums and commercial areas, A. W. Jones, Sr., supported passage of legislation putting the island under the supervision of the National Park Service, and found the financing necessary to fund the purchase to preserve Cumberland.

  • Land Trust Creation

When the St. Simons Land Trust was organized in 2001, with the full backing of Sea Island Company Chairman Bill Jones III, the company became a constant source of support, with contributions of land and funds. Jones established a voluntary fee of $2 per night paid by guests of the resort as a source of ongoing funding for the trust. Since its inception, more than $1.9 million has been donated to the St. Simons Land Trust through the nightly fee. In addition to financial support, land along Frederica Road slated for development as a subdivision was transferred to the Land Trust through the Sea Island Company. When the Land Trust bought the southeast comer of the Demere and Frederica Roads intersection (now a round-about), the company was a major source of funding, and designed and installed landscaping, transforming the corner from a gas station into a park.

  • Champions of Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation

In 2005, led by founding chair and former Chairman and CEO of Sea Island Company, Bill Jones III, a small group of local philanthropic visionaries established a community foundation to serve Coastal Georgia. More than 60 local families and foundations came together to create The Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation in hopes of ensuring its work would be “for good, forever.”

Today, CCGF has grown to approximately $50 million in assets, representing over 100 funds, governed by 19 board members. CCGF employs three full-time and two part-time staff. Current programs include an annual competitive grant cycle for nonprofits across the three-county region, which includes Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh Counties.
